Our products are specifically designed to help visual learners, and other right brain learners, those labeled with dyslexia, autism, Asperger's, ADD and those who struggle with reading comprehension. CFP's products are also highly effective in teaching beginning readers, building a strong foundation for learning from the very start. Typically, children from ages 4-1/2 to 7 are in the stage of brain development in which the “right brain” is rapidly developing. “The most natural way for children to learn when they first go to school at ages five and six is through image, emotion and spontaneous movement.” In the traditional system of education, students begin with letter and number recognition and go directly into reading and computation. A lot of drill and memorization is involved. This might not a problem if we involved image, emotion, and movement, and built on the student’s imagination and vocabulary. As Carla Hannaford, PhD, explains in Smart Moves (pp 82-85), “strangely we teach the opposite.

We teach children to sit still, learn letters and numbers in a linear fashion [recite the ABC’s, count to 100, etc].” Child1st is uniquely designed to teach the way children learn best. Bob and Sarah Major launched the Child1st website out of their own desire to share with others some of the teaching tools that they found to be very effective with children who struggle in traditional classrooms, or with traditional teaching approaches. In the fall of 2006, Sarah resigned from full time teaching in order to devote herself to this work full time.
